A Relaxed Coastal Wedding at The Officers Mess | Auckland Wedding Photographer

There’s a reason The Officers Mess is one of Auckland’s most loved wedding venues. Perched above the Waitematā Harbour with uninterrupted views across to Rangitoto, it offers a ceremony backdrop that feels distinctly New Zealand while still having an elegant, timeless feel.

Alisa and Cam chose The Officers Mess for their summer wedding in 2023, and it couldn’t have suited them more. Their day was relaxed, heartfelt and filled with beautiful moments shared with their closest family and friends.

A Ceremony with a View

One of the standout features of The Officers Mess is its lawn ceremony space. Guests are treated to sweeping harbour views, with Rangitoto sitting proudly in the background. It feels peaceful and private while still being only a short ferry ride from central Auckland.

As guests arrived, the ceremony setup was beautifully simple, allowing the natural surroundings to shine. Wooden benches, soft florals and the sparkling blue water created a setting that hardly needed any additional styling.

Watching Alisa and Cam exchange their vows overlooking the harbour was incredibly special. It’s one of those ceremony locations that always makes people pause and take it all in.

Why I Love Photographing Weddings at The Officers Mess

As an Auckland wedding photographer, The Officers Mess is a venue I always enjoy returning to because there is so much variety in one location.

The venue itself is full of charm, with its historic white building and light-filled reception spaces. The expansive lawns and coastal outlooks are beautiful throughout the day, and because everything is conveniently located together, couples can spend more time celebrating and less time travelling between locations.

For photographers, it’s also a dream because you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to portraits.

Portraits Among the Trees and Along the Beach

One of my favourite things about The Officers Mess is the variety of photo opportunities nearby. Within minutes, you can move from harbour views to towering trees and then down to the beach.

For Alisa and Cam’s portraits, we wandered amongst the beautiful cypress trees before heading to the shoreline as the light softened later in the day. The beach below the venue always feels like a hidden gem, with its rugged cliffs, pōhutukawa trees and peaceful stretches of sand.

These locations gave us a lovely mix of imagery – from grand landscape portraits that showcased the beauty of Auckland to intimate moments that focused entirely on the two of them.

Capturing the Day on Film and Digital

Alisa and Cam’s wedding was photographed using both digital and film photography.

I love combining the two mediums because each brings something different to a wedding gallery. Digital photography allows me to capture every fleeting moment as it unfolds, while film has a softness and depth that feels nostalgic and timeless.

The natural colours of the harbour, the soft, neutral tones of the venue, and the warm evening light all translated beautifully onto film, perfectly complementing the relaxed feel of their day.

Getting Married at The Officers Mess

If you’re dreaming of an Auckland wedding venue that offers breathtaking views, beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces, and multiple portrait locations all within easy reach, The Officers Mess is hard to beat.

Alisa and Cam’s wedding was a beautiful reminder that you don’t need an elaborate setup when your surroundings are this stunning. Add in your favourite people, a meaningful ceremony and plenty of time to soak it all in, and you have all the ingredients for a truly memorable day.
