There’s something about Cornwall Park that makes it perfect for proposals. Open space, beautiful light, and plenty of quiet pockets if you know where to go. It’s my local park, so always a pleasure to shoot here!
This one was photographed in June 2024 on behalf of Localgrapher for Chris and Rachel. They’d been doing long distance, with Chris based in the States and Rachel here in New Zealand, so this moment had been a long time coming.
We tucked into a spot in among the trees on a crisp winter afternoon, with that soft golden light cutting through. Simple, low key, and just enough planning to give them space to be in it.
She had no idea.
Chris dropped to one knee, she said yes, and that mix of shock, laughter, and “is this real?” followed straight after. The kind of moment you don’t need to over-direct, just step back and let it unfold.
Then, the best part, their corgi made an appearance for a few photos afterwards, which honestly brought the energy up another level.
And in true small-world fashion, I realised mid-shoot that I actually knew Rachel from years before. Classic New Zealand moment.
We wandered a little through the park afterwards for some relaxed portraits while it all sank in. Nothing forced, just capturing it as it felt.
If you’re planning a proposal in Auckland and want something natural and low pressure, Cornwall Park is always a good place to start. It’s all about finding the right pocket and letting the moment do the rest.
