One of my favourite YouTube channels is model Ruth Crilly’s ‘A Model Recommends‘. Ruth makes beauty, style and lifestyle videos all based on her personal experience and being a model. Yes, I’m a tad obsessed with YouTube Beauty Gurus but more on that another time…
I love to get recommendations from industry professionals, those who’ve had real life experience in a particular area and can give you a well rounded opinion or advice about something you may struggle with. So, I’ve decided to start a little blog series called ‘A Photographer Recommends…’ I am in no way saying I’m the an expert in every situation but I would love to share some of my experiences and ideas and hopefully it will help someone!
Today, we are talking about relaxing on your wedding day! Strange you might think, how could I ever relax with all the preparation/excitement/adrenaline/nerves/timing/people?!! Here’s a few things I’ve learned from going to many weddings about how to make the day a bit more stress-free and how to relax in front of the camera as well:
1. Let it go. You have been planning every detail of this perfect day for months. However, sometimes things go wrong, your hair and makeup runs late, it rains, a bridesmaid rips her dress, you get lost or stuck in traffic… So many things can threaten to ruin your special day but it is so important not to let any little drama affect you, your attitude or your overall enjoyment of the whole day. If anything unexpected happens, try not to worry about it and remember that this day is about celebrating you and the love of your life committing to each other. Nothing can ruin that and by keeping a smile on your face through any tricky situations, the day will be perfect no matter what!
2. Book a photographer who’s work you love but you also feel comfortable with and trust. I often get told by couples, “Oh we’re not very photogenic”, “We’re awkward in front of the camera”, “He does this funny thing with his face…” Bring it on. It’s my job to make sure you are comfortable in front of the camera and most importantly that you enjoy being photographed! A lot of people get quite nervous about their photos and worried they won’t look good in them. For one, you will look absolutely incredible on your wedding day, I guarantee it. Secondly, if you’ve booked a photographer you can trust, they will help and direct you, encourage and have fun with you, creating beautiful, natural moments that capture the absolute joy you will feel on your wedding day!
3. Think about having a First Look. If you haven’t heard of a First Look, it is when you as a couple have a special moment alone where you see each other before the ceremony. This is not only a beautiful moment I love to capture but also a rare bit of alone time for you and your groom. It can really help calm any pre-ceremony nerves and also help with the flow of your day if you decide to do your bridal party photos before the ceremony too. You don’t have to run away from your guests for photos later in the day.
4. Focus on enjoying every second of the day. Your wedding day rushes by so quickly and I think it’s important to have a few moments through the day where you stop and just take in everything that is going on. It will be a whirlwind of excitement, love and joy and you will remember it forever. Just have fun and enjoy the party!
I hope this has been helpful, and I’d love to hear from you if you have any other tips on how to relax on your wedding day, Rescue Remedy and champagne may be great but I think being present, letting go of worries and just having fun is much more important!
